Abstract

Local hospital and systems continue to merge. Over time, and as a result of mergers, the role of hospital boards have changed resulting in 2-boards with split in governance responsibilities between the not for profit local and the system boards. We explore answers to three questions to provide insight for local boards and systems boards prior to merger: 1) when there is a merger, how do culture, values and community need impact board decision making; 2) which board roles and responsibilities should be addressed first, and 3) do culture and roles differ for system and legacy boards?
