Abstract
Healthcare disparities have impacted care being provided to certain populations, for example African-Americans and Hispanics as the overall United States demographics continue to shift, there is opportunity for leadership and governance to better reflect the populations looking at race and gender composition. The number of women on hospital boards have remained unchanged 2007 – 2013. This study takes a qualitative approach to examine board composition of New York State hospitals. The study considers the American Hospital Association’s #123Equity for Pledge campaign. The results show on average hospitals had 10% minority board membership. A larger board dilutes the minority and female composition. A 10% increase in rates of minority patient admissions is associated with a 5% high minority board membership.
