Abstract
As the formal leaders of their organizations, hospital administrators play a major role in ensuring that their hospitals meet the challenge of continually improving the care that is provided within their organizations. While the literature identifies some of the things that these leaders should be doing to lead their organizations toward providing exemplary care, the literature is lacking with regard to the specifics of how those who are successful are actually able to do so. This study sought to fill this gap in the literature through a qualitative examination of hospital administrators' perceptions of their roles in Q I. The results of this study are based upon interviews that were conducted with seven hospital administrators of organizations that have been recognized as providing outstanding care. Theoretical strategies that can be used by other hospital administrators who have a desire to improve quality within their organizations were identified and are presented.
