Abstract

Executive functioning (EF) skills including inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, are essential for successful participation in daily occupations. Therapeutic riding (TR) programs offer a unique environment where cognitive, sensory, and motor systems can be engaged simultaneously. Limited research, however, exists on how occupational therapy (OT) principles targeting EF can be systemically integrated into TR settings. This quality improvement project was conducted at a nonprofit therapeutic riding program serving children and adults with psychological, emotional, physical, and cognitive challenges. The purpose of the project was to enhance the structure, consistency, and therapeutic values of the riding sessions by introducing and implementing a standardized, occupation-based volunteer training protocol. The goals for the project included: -the development of educational and promotional resources to increase understanding of EF within TR settings -training volunteers in best practices -creating sustainable tools to support rider and volunteer skill development and increase program organization. A procedural manual with a two-track assessment system and a mobile app were developed for this purpose. Outcomes, measured through pre- / post-volunteer education session surveys and feedback demonstrated increased confidence, knowledge, and perceived competence in applying EF-supportive strategies during sessions. The overall project helped to demonstrate the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary approach in a non-traditional setting and establish sustainable training materials for future volunteers. These results highlight the value of integrating OT-informed EF strategies into TR programs and suggest opportunities for continued development, including expanding assessment areas and exploring cost-effective digital platforms to support longer-term sustainability.
