Abstract
Early support for students to develop strong executive functioning skills is crucial, as these abilities are linked to lifelong success, well-being, financial stability, and overall quality of life (Diamond, 2013). A needs assessment conducted via REDCap revealed that while educators were generally familiar with executive function, they reported limited access to resources, reduced confidence in implementing strategies, and time constraints within the classroom.
The purpose of this doctoral capstone project was to enhance educators understanding and confidence in implementing strategies and techniques to address executive function challenges in the classroom. This project involved the development and delivery of educational resources aimed at improving knowledge and increasing confidence in responding to challenging behaviors. Project goals included the creation of materials to promote consistent use of Tier 1 strategies and tools within classroom settings. An educational presentation was delivered, and an evidence-based occupational therapy informed toolkit was developed. The toolkit includes information on common diagnoses, executive function education, and Tier 1 strategies.
This project aims to support educators by providing practical, evidence-informed strategies to better understand and address executive functioning challenges in the classroom. Participants included educators and specialists (n = 10). Following implementation, data was collected using a mixed-methods approach through an anonymous REDCap survey to evaluate satisfaction with the educational materials and educators perceived usability in the classroom. After dissemination of the presentation and toolkit, educators reported improved understanding of executive function and increased confidence in addressing challenging behaviors using the provided strategies and tools. While this project cannot eliminate the many demands and stressors educators face, it focused on supporting them by providing practical, real-time resources and strategies that can be easily implemented, ultimately helping make classroom management more manageable and enhancing their ability to support students effectively.
