Description
There is an increasing call to teach pre-health professionals about social determinants of health (SDOH). We designed a modified “Privilege Walk” (MPW assignment to assess individual privilege, specifically regarding race/ethnicity and socioeconomic status. The MPW aimed to create awareness of personal privilege as an SDOH, change students’ attitudes about privilege, and determine if students identified certain SDOH with better privilege. Students completed a pre-survey prior to the MPW assignment and a post-survey immediately after the MPW assignment. The exploratory study demonstrated the need to teach about SDOH and include frank discussions about personal privilege as a component of SDOH.
