Stuart joined the College of Nursing in 1985 and assumed the position of dean of the College in 2002. During her deanship, Stuart’s accomplishments were extensive. Student enrollment doubled in number, she created the Stethoscope Ceremony for new BSN students, and established the MUSC Healthcare Simulation Center. The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree program was opened in 2009 and all graduate programs at the College were placed online to provide “any time, any where” learning for nurses in the state and across the country. She raised the College's research profile and brought it to national prominence. Stuart also is responsible for the 2012-2014 major renovation of the College of Nursing building, originally designed as a nursing dormitory in 1955. Stuart retired in 2018. She is a tenured Distinguished University Professor in the College of Nursing and a Professor in the College of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.
