First African American woman anesthesiologist hired by MUSC Health in 2013

Ebony Jade Hilton, MD, became the first African American woman anesthesiologist hired by MUSC Health in 2013. A 2004 graduate of the College of Charleston with a triple major in biochemistry, molecular biology, and inorganic chemistry, Hilton earned her medical degree from the MUSC College of Medicine in 2008. She also completed her Residency in Anesthesia and a Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at MUSC. While at MUSC, Hilton was a clinical instructor for fourth-year medical students and participated in medical mission trips through Project Madaktari at Bugando Medical Center in Mwanza, Tanzania.

Her contributions to ending health disparities and advocating for underserved and marginalized populations have earned her recognition from the National Medical Association and the National Minority Quality Forum, which awarded her one of its top 40 under 40 Leaders in Health Care awards. Hilton is a practicing physician and associate professor at the University of Virginia-Charlottesville.
