Donna Johnson, MD, was born and raised in Aynor, SC. She attended Furman University and received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1987. She completed her residency and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at the University of California San Diego. After working at UC San Diego, Johnson returned to South Carolina and in 1996 joined the MUSC faculty as a maternal-fetal medicine specialist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Johnson served as director of the division of material fetal medicine until 2012.

Since 2012, Johnson has served as Professor and Chair of the MUSC College of Medicine's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and holds the Lawrence L. Hester Endowed Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is the first woman to hold this position in the history of the department. She is co-director of the SC Pregnancy Wellness ECHO, a collaborative program between Prisma Health and MUSC dedicated to improving access to evidence-based best practice patient care to impact maternal-fetal outcomes and reduce health disparities across South Carolina.

Johnson serves as a board member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Foundation and the American Association of Obstetrics and Gynecologists Foundation. Her clinical and basic studies have resulted in the publication of dozens of scientific papers, abstracts, and book chapters on topics ranging from severe preeclampsia to immunological disorders that complicate pregnancy. Over the course of her MUSC career, Johnson has won over twenty teaching awards.
