Monica Cayouette, DMD, MS, FACP, received her BA from Drury College in Springfield, MO, where she studied Biology and Chemistry. She then attended the MUSC College of Dental Medicine where she received her DMD in 1996. Afterward, she completed a residency in Prosthodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, School of Dentistry, and in 1999 earned a Master’s in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. She is board-certified through the American Board of Prosthodontists. Her primary clinical areas of interest is dental implantology, dental attrition, and the restoration of dental implants. Her current research focus is implant over-denture pick-up materials and simulated dental treatment with the college’s Dental Robot that she acquired from a generous donation from Nissin-Kilgore.

Cayouette is a member of many professional associations such as the American Dental Association, American Dental Education Association, Academy of Osseointegration, American College of Prosthodontics, South Carolina Dental Association, and the Coastal District Dental Society. She is also a Fellow of the American Board of Prosthodontics, the American College of Prosthodontics, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists. In 2005, Cayouette was awarded the New Dentist Award of South Carolina by the South Carolina Dental Association. She has served on many state and national committees and currently sits on the South Carolina Den Pac Board as the Vice-chair and as the Secretary Treasure of the SC Pierre Fauchard Academy.

In 1999, Cayouette began private practice in Mt. Pleasant part-time and teaching in the CODM part-time. She quickly fell in love with teaching and the next year she was hired full-time to start the student Dental Implant Program. She has served as Director of the Implant Prosthodontic Division in the Department of Oral Rehabilitation since 2001. She is not only active in both predoctoral and graduate dental education but also in continuing education. She maintains an active practice limited to prosthodontics and dental implants.

Cayouette became the first woman to serve as a department vice-chair and ultimately chair in the College of Dental Medicine. She served as vice-chair in 2013, then interim chair in 2014 and eventually Chair of the Department of Oral Rehabilitation in 2015. Since that time, she has continued with research and teaching and achieved Tenure in 2021. Most importantly, Cayouette is the proud mother of her son Caleb and wife to Scott R. Cayouette, DMD.
