Darlene Shaw, PhD

A native of Ohio, Darlene Shaw, PhD, received her bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in 1970 from Ohio University, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her PhD in clinical psychology from Ohio University. After completing her internship at the MUSC/VAMC consortium in Charleston in 1975, she joined the MUSC faculty in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in 1976, rising to professor with tenure. Early in her career, while working as a clinician and educator at the Charleston VAMC, Shaw and her colleagues published
The Psychiatry Learning System, the first-ever programmed textbook for medical students, including videos of patient interviews demonstrating psychiatric disorders. In 1988 Shaw founded Counseling and Psychological Services, a mental health clinic for MUSC students, which also served as a training site for psychology interns and psychiatry residents.

Throughout her career, Shaw served in a series of leadership roles with increasing responsibility. In the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, she served as the Director of the Psychiatry Clerkship for Medical Students, the Director of Medical Student Education, and the Vice-Chair for Education. At the university level, she served as Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, Executive Director for Student Health and Wellness, and Associate Dean for Student Life. Following a national search in 2009, she was appointed Associate Provost for Educational Affairs and Student Life, reflecting her dedication to students’ education and well-being. In 2016, she was appointed MUSC’s Chief Institutional Strategy Officer. Shaw maintained a clinical practice through MUSC Physicians throughout her career.

Shaw made outstanding contributions in service, leadership, and teaching and is the recipient of numerous awards such as the MUSC Foundation Teaching Excellence Award, the South Carolina Psychological Association Outstanding Educator Award, and the MUSC Women Scholars Initiative’s 2015 Advancement of Women Faculty Award. She has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national meetings. She was selected from a national pool to participate in the inaugural cohort of the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine program and is Past-President of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, the only psychologist to be elected to that role.
