Ruth Chamberlin was born in Yonkers, New York, in 1903. She graduated in 1928 from Mount Sinai Hospital School of Nursing. In 1932, Chamberlin earned her BS in nursing supervision from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York, where she also received an MA in nursing administration in 1951. She served as educational director at the University Hospital of the Good Shepherd at Syracuse University and later as director of the school of nursing there.

In 1937 Chamberlin began her career with the Medical College of South Carolina as Educational Director for the School of Nursing. After serving three years in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II, she returned to the school in 1946. While serving as Director of the School of Nursing, Chamberlin was also promoted to Director of Nursing at Roper Hospital in 1948. She was named Dean of the School of Nursing in 1949 and received the additional title of Professor of Nursing in 1956.

Chamberlin received many honors and appointments. She served on the Executive Committee of the State Board of Health, its first female appointee. She was also the first president of the South Carolina League for Nursing Education, as well as president of the South Carolina Nurses Association. From 1948 to 1949 Chamberlin was president of the Charleston District Nurses Association. She was an adviser to the South Carolina Nurses Association, and chairman of the Education Division of the State League for Nursing.

Ruth Chamberlin, RN, was the first person to hold the title of Dean and Professor within the Medical College of South Carolina School of Nursing. She died on February 19, 1988, in Charleston.
