Isabel Lockard, PhD, was born in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada on June 27, 1915. In 1938 Lockard received a Bachelor of Science in Speech from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She earned her PhD in Anatomy with a major in Neuroanatomy in 1946 from the University of Michigan where she was a student of Dr. Elizabeth C. Crosby. Lockard served on the faculty of Georgetown University from 1947 until joining the Medical College of South Carolina’s Department of Anatomy in 1952 as Assistant Professor. She was the second full-time female faculty member in the College of Medicine, and the first neuroanatomist at the Medical University to retain tenure in the position over the long term. She became a Professor in 1969, a position she held until her retirement as Professor Emeritus in 1985. In 1999, MUSC awarded Lockard with the Distinguished Faculty Service Award.

Lockard authored numerous articles based on her research interests: blood supply of the central nervous system, microcirculation or the microscopic study of conjunctival circulation of patients with a neurologic or psychiatric disorder, and the anatomy of the ferret brain. She also authored the
